S.C. Senator Shane Massey Inspires Volunteers to Continue Charge

Published in Blog on June 29, 2021 by Michael Harper

South Carolina State Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey spoke to South Carolina Convention of States leaders and volunteers about their grassroots efforts and plans to bring the COS resolution to the floor of the Senate for a vote in the first half of the 2022 legislative session.

Massey praised the group for their their legislative outreach efforts and reminded them that persistence, professionalism and politeness were the necessary ingredients to bring around legislators still on the fence.

The Senator shared his admiration of the Constitution and its framers. He opined that the concept of federalism was an extraordinary idea which withstands the test of time and is responsible for our great Republic. Massey stated Madison laid the groundwork for an Article V Convention. It is the solution large enough for the task of preserving federalism.

Massey also expressed his view that amendments emanating from such a convention must be narrowly focused with broad appeal to meet the high bar of approval set by three quarters of the States– no easy task, for even the most popular ideas. However, as he stated, it may just be the “Hail Mary pass” that wins the game and we need to be prepared to make the best pass we can.

Massey has been working within his caucus as well as across the aisle to gain enough support for when the resolution gets to the floor next session. To that end, he implored the group of leaders and volunteers to “work some more” during the period leading up to January and make sure undecided Senators are politely and professionally educated. It goes without saying shoring up support from supporters and co-sponsors alike is just as important.

We are fortunate to have the enthusiastic support of the Senate Majority Leader, but that support alone will not get the Resolution to the floor or across the line. Numbers will. The success of Massey’s commitment in making COS a Senate priority in 2022 depends on our group showing up early and often.
