Political Connections

Published in Blog on December 20, 2018 by Sharon Correll

I am not an important person. And I don’t know important people. I didn’t grow up in a family with money, influence, or connections. Until I got involved in Convention of States, I was never politically active beyond holding a sign at an occasional pro-life rally. The closest I’ve come to political power was my grandfather who was a Delaware state senator sixty years ago—before I was born. Oh, and my brother-in-law who used to have some interactions with Joe Biden’s office back in a former life and career—long before Biden was Vice President.

So getting involved in COS has been an interesting experience.  I regularly hear mentions of “our weekly phone call with the governor’s staff”, “So-and-So who works in Mr. Famous TV Commentator’s office,” and “my good friend in the White House.” I still don’t actually know famous people, but I am beginning to realize that I do know people who know people who know some really famous people!

That’s kind of fun, but it still feels foreign to me. I’m not a mover or shaker, I mostly just type on my computer and make a few phone calls. I don’t see myself as the kind of a person who has the ability to win friends or influence people. And I’m afraid I wouldn't know how to make use of a political connection if it came up and bit me on the butt.

But in that other sphere, in the invisible realm that is more real than this one, it’s a very different matter. As a delegate of the King of the Universe, I can stroll into his presence any time of the day or night, express my concerns, and call on him to act. He’s always ready to hear me—in fact, he is more anxious for me to bring my requests than I am, sometimes, to present them. Sometimes he even tells me what he wants me to ask—all I have to do is agree.

And my lack of connections in the human realm doesn’t matter. I can short-circuit them all and jump right to the center of power. I can just as easily pray for a local Texas district captain, a state director in California, or an anonymous legislator in Vermont. I can call on God on behalf of a fellow volunteer with health problems, COS president Mark Meckler recording a TV interview, or Donald Trump negotiating with Kim Jong-un.

Best of all, the Sovereign Lord of the Universe is never at a loss. He is never caught off guard by our crises or lacking the power to address them. He sees the end from the beginning and has a game plan that's bigger and more amazing that I could ever wrap my mind around.

I figure the person who has his ear is the one with the real power after all.
