Patriots launch renewed effort for Convention of States in South Dakota

"By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail." -Benjamin Franklin

This notion is not lost on Convention of States South Dakota supporters. These patriots are well aware of that and have chosen to come together to create a plan to grow the Convention of States movement across the state.

Over 50 citizens of western South Dakota met in Rapid City last week to brainstorm and set a plan of attack for the upcoming year.

Regional Captain Harvey Fitzgerald lead the meeting and facilitated networking among the attendees.

"Coming off a disappointing legislative session, it was great to see so many South Dakotans engaged in this fight for liberty," said John James, District 35 Captain.

Rapid City COS supporters discuss ways to spread the word and have more people in the area sign petitions to join the movement.

The group elected to continue last year's goals to educate friends, family, and neighbors about the importance of Article V and adding petition signers from the area.

"It is always inspiring to connect with your neighbors and come together to strengthen our country," added James.

Based on the goals set from the 2020 strategic plan, the COS warriors agreed that building on petition signers leads to finding active volunteers. Those volunteers turn into the backbone of the grassroots army.

"What a great meeting with such [an] honest, sincere, and enthusiastic group of people," said Paula Gregg of Belle Fourche.

One break-out-group brainstormed a list of events to have a booth for COS throughout the area this summer.

In spite of the COVID-19 pandemic, South Dakota petitions grew by 70% in 2020. The number of attendees to the west river planning meeting more than doubled.

"I enjoyed meeting face-to-face with the local COS supporters in my community," said Gregg. "Now we can really prepare successfully for the next legislative session."

The Convention of States resolution was introduced in both the house and senate committees this legislative session. The bill was defeated by just one vote in both committees.

”This was a great planning meeting with many new faces from a large area,” said Brian Barber, Hermosa resident. “The number of patriots willing to help COS reach our goal to have our state become one of the confirmed states in our next legislative session.”

The group developed a list of several events that they hope to have a COS presence at this summer and into the fall across western South Dakota.
