Oklahoma Capitol Surge a big success!

Published in Blog on February 07, 2021 by Susie McCleskey

Convention of States Oklahoma team members were joined on Tuesday, February 2, by Passed States Regional Director Jonathan Viaud for the 2021 Capitol Surge.

After meeting in the capitol rotunda to discuss our goal of removing the Sunset Clause and educating legislators on SJR23 "The US Senator Dr. Tom Coburn Resolution of 2021," we distributed addressed letters to each legislator along with a COS Pocket Guide. Additional flyers on the Second Amendment and Veterans were also distributed.

State Director John Guinn (pictured above right) and Regional Director Jonathan Viaud (pictured above left) met with Senator Rob Standridge (pictured above center), author of the 2016 resolution and amendment to our resolution.

They also met with Senator Darcy Jech (Chairman of the Rules Committee, which is our next stop for the resolution's amendment) and with Representative Mark Lepak, who decided to become a state legislator because of Convention of States.

John and Jonathan then met with COS supporter Representative Terry O'Donnell, Speaker Pro Tempore, who has authored a bill to require all public education institutions to teach a semester on the Constitution.

Further discussion revealed that Speaker Chas. McCall has authored a similar bill which they want to combine and co-sponsor. COS Oklahoma hopes to help sponsor the combined bill.

District Captain Kevin Tutty met with newly-elected Representative Eric Roberts and Greg Treat, both huge fans of COS. Several other volunteers were able to meet with a number of representatives who asked questions and showed an interest in learning more about COS and others who were already supporters.

The day was a big success, and our team intends to stay in touch with our legislators on a regular basis to be sure our resolution passes this year.
