New Poll: Only 30% of Americans feel represented by Washington

Published in Blog on July 17, 2017 by Convention Of States Project

A CNN poll released today found that only 30% of registered voters believe their views are well represented by the government in Washington, while 40% believe their views are not represented at all.

That figure spikes among Republican and Republican-leaning voters. Among GOP voters, 53% say they don't feel their views are well represented in Washington at all, nearly double the 27% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents who feel the same way.

For a supposed representative government, 30% is a remarkably low number. It seems that no matter who the voters send to Washington, they all end up serving D.C.’s continual, ever-expanding campaign to increase its own power. From the moment they first set foot on Capitol Hill, our elected leaders begin to believe that they know better than the people who put them there.

So maybe the solution isn’t to elect different politicians -- maybe the solution is to limit their ability to play the dictator from their offices in Washington.

That’s the solution offered by a Convention of States. Article V allows the states to call a convention for the purpose of proposing constitutional amendments that shrink the power and jurisdiction of the federal government. These amendments could include clarifications of the General Welfare Clause -- which the Supreme Court has used to grant almost unlimited jurisdiction to Congress -- and the Commerce Clause -- which the Supreme Court has interpreted to allow D.C. to regulate nearly every aspect of business.

With a few simple clarifying clauses, a Convention of States could ensure that the federal government no longer has the ability to ignore the will of their constituents and dictate every aspect of their lives.

We’re working in every state in the nation to pass resolutions calling for such a convention. Our teams have seen success in dozens of states across the country, with Florida, Alaska, Georgia, and Alabama passing our resolution through both chamber of the legislature.
