COS New Jersey volunteer Gary Brenner earns coveted Challenge Coin

Published in Blog on July 28, 2020 by Seth Essendrop

There was a lot on the docket for Convention of States New Jersey's annual strategy meeting on July 25, as the team charted a course for the coming year.

However, one major order of business was not printed on the agenda, something Mark Meckler described as "the most important thing [he] gets to do in Convention of States."

After playing the video Mark had recorded for the strategy meeting, State Director Jonathan Viaud announced that Mark had one more message for the team.

In the second recording, Mark announced that a member of New Jersey's leadership team had earned the coveted Convention of States Challenge Coin. News of the award came as a surprise to most in attendance, especially the awardee: Gary Brenner.

The coin and its accompanying certificate and pin are reserved for "extraordinary volunteers." Only 300 were ever minted, and the mold has since been destroyed. Gary joins three other COS New Jersey volunteers that have also received the prestigious award.

In awarding the coin, Mark described Gary as the "quintessential volunteer," "mission first," and "a total media pro." Noting Gary's willingness to go above and beyond with his work as a District Captain and Media Liaison as well as his ability to build teams and coalitions, Mark held Gary up as an example of true servant leadership.

This sentiment was heartily seconded by Jonathan, Regional Director Monica Sellers, and even District Captain Bob Nordin, each of whom spoke about Gary's service. They emphasized how essential his contributions have been to the COS New Jersey successes.

Accepting the award, an overwhelmed Gary spoke briefly about why he joined and what motivates him to thrive in the work. Gary said that he was first introduced to the organization in early 2015.

"I knew that this was something special, and I felt that I could help with it," he said.

Looking back on his contributions over the last five years, it is evident that his remarks were a massive understatement yet emblematic of the humble and dedicated servant leader that is Gary Brenner.
