Cindy Fout will lead a town hall meeting to discuss the Convention of States solution at the Hart Community Center on January 29 at 12:00p.m. She will field questions after the presentation.
“One of my biggest concerns is loss of freedom for our children," says Cindy Fout, explaining one of the concerns that caused her to join Convention of States.
"They are being raised to believe that government will take care of you and not that it’s on you to do the best you can. Our children don’t understand loss of freedom, because they have always had it.”
Fout has always believed in defending our freedom, leading her to a 20-year naval career. More recently, she realized that the fight for freedom had to continue at home, as well.
“I guess I expected America would keep on running the way it was. I lived in a small town, and it wasn’t until I looked around and asked, 'How did we get here?' that I realized something had to be done. My daughter came home one day from school, and she was talking about history. She told me how Abraham Lincoln would never have freed slaves if he didn’t have to.
"On another day, she mentioned how Thomas Jefferson shouldn’t be considered a good man because he had slaves. I was concerned and decided to look around and find out more about what was happening by searching online. During my search, I came to realize how uninformed I was. Before, I thought, ‘I’ll live my life, it will be good, and I will pass on what I have to my daughter.’ But during my online research, I found out that as a country, we are losing what we had. I didn’t realize this at first because I live in a small town. But it reaching [its] tentacles out even to my community.”
Cindy Fout now works as a postal clerk for Walkerville. As a resident of a small town, she was attracted by the solution proposed by Convention of States, a nonprofit organization dedicated to using the rights granted under Article V of the U.S. Constitution to bring power back to a more local level.
This constitutional process allows state legislatures to call a convention for proposing amendments. Convention of States Action's resolution aims to curtail the rapid expansion of the powers within the federal government. To date, 15 states have passed this resolution, and nine more have passed it in at least one chamber.
Fout recently became a District Captain for COS, because she believes it offers a solution to a federal government that seems out of touch with citizens at the local level.
“If we don’t shrink the federal government, it won’t be good," she said. "They aren’t interested in the people. They don’t have time for us. The only thing the federal government does is they just keep getting bigger. They don’t seem to know how to stop. Someone needs to rein them in. This also includes inflation, loss of jobs, and sending jobs overseas again. I don’t want to see that happen again. This is why I joined Convention of States.”
Fout states that, at times, when she shares about Convention of States, people respond with “You need to save your state first.” Her answer is, “If you save your state, but you don’t stop the federal government, your state won’t matter. We need to work on both fronts.”
She is hopeful as recently she has seen a real resurgence of patriotism, with people starting to wake up and notice that things need to be changed.
“It’s important to get as many people involved as possible," she said. "COS is one of those things we can do. It’s time to get involved. It’s time for everyone to get involved. “
