Midlands Leadership and Volunteers Plan Strategy Over Lunch in Sumter

Published in Blog on June 21, 2021 by Michael Harper

We're saving the Republic--one cheeseburger at a time.

The Convention of States Midlands leadership and volunteers gathered at the Restaurant at Second Mill in Sumter, SC, Saturday, June 12, to simultaneously reinvigorate our patriotic spirit and fill our bellies. Regional Coordinator Jeff Kilgren and District Captain Phil Good welcomed a group of thirteen foot soldiers hungry for strategy and ready for action.

And strategize we did! Plans were laid out for the summer and fall, focusing on gaining support of the last few senators needed to overcome a cloture vote leading to a floor vote on our resolution in January.

The last mile is often the hardest, but we will be concentrating our efforts on the three Democratic Senators in our region who have not yet committed to support COS. None are lost causes, and one even appears to be a "possible," but we at least want to convince them that COS is the will of their constituents and if they cannot be fully supportive, they should at least abstain from obstructing the people's will to have a floor vote. Jeff is forwarding a "pitch to Democrats" for us to share and perfect.

Plans were made to assure success of upcoming events: The Statewide Meeting in Columbia on June 19, at our booth at the Sumter County Fair in in October and at the Marshall's Farm Festival booth (Kershaw County) also in October. (Thanks to Becky Yarborough for making this happen). Attendees were also tasked to help our NC brethren make calls to petition signers over the next few days to contact their Senators in preparation for that state's upcoming Senate vote. If they beat us to number 16, at least we can say we helped!

The Midlands group will meet again in Bishopville, SC, on July 17 at noon, hosted by Lee County DC Becky Yarborough. Contact Becky for details (rebecca.yarborough@cosaction.com), and we would love to see more of you there.
