Massive caravan of migrants headed to U.S. southern border

Published in Blog on October 22, 2024 by Jakob Fay

Election Day is right around the corner — and so are 2,000 migrants from Mexico.

A massive caravan set out for America’s southern border on Sunday, citing concerns about a potential change in immigration policy under a future administration.

“That is what makes us fearful,” one Venezuelan migrant reported. “They say this could change because they could both close the [Customs and Border Protection App] and all the services that are helping migrants.”

News of the incoming caravan arrives just weeks before the 2024 U.S. presidential election, in which immigration and border security have played a major role. An estimated 6.7 million immigrants have unlawfully entered the United States since 2021. Both campaigns seek to pinpoint the crisis on the other.

“Every day, Americans are experiencing the consequences of the unchecked flow of inadmissible aliens into their communities,” reacted Mark E. Green, House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman, to the latest border encounter numbers.

“There are countless examples of those aliens going on to commit crimes against innocent Americans, ” he added.
“We simply cannot go on like this as a country. These [open borders] policies have devastated our safety, security, and sovereignty. It’s time to return to policies that secured our border and our nation.”

The American people agree. For the first time in nearly 20 years, most Americans (55%) want less immigration. Almost 70% say the federal government should adopt a “more hardline approach to immigration.”

This is a developing story. Refresh for updates.
