Supporters of federal term limits and other restrictions on federal power will hold a Convention of States rally at the Vermont State House Friday, March 14 at 9 AM.

Lead sponsor Rep. Mark Higley (R-Lowell) and eight other legislators on January 29 introduced the Convention of States Article V Resolution (Joint House Resolution 1), which seeks to “impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government, and limit the terms of office for its officials and for members of Congress.”

The co-sponsors of JRH.1 are Reps. Gregory Burtt, James Casey, Voranus Coffin IV, Joshua Dobrovich, Todd Nielsen, Debra Powers, Michael Southworth, and Michael Tagliavia. All of the co-sponsors are first-time Republican representatives elected in the November Red Wave that swept the Democrat supermajority out of the State House.

The resolution is now in the Government Operations and Military Affairs Committee. One of the sponsors, Coffin, is a member of Gov Ops. The next step in the legislative process is to secure a committee hearing for the bill. The committee agenda for next week has not yet been published.

Advocates believe that an Article V Convention of States is a crucial step toward ensuring lasting change in Washington, D.C., and empowering state legislatures to take a more active role in governance.

Organizers emphasize the importance of making their voices heard. “We need our legislators to understand that ‘We The People’ are ready to help make lasting change in D.C., and we expect their support,” said a spokesperson for the movement.

Supporters are encouraged to mark their calendars and join the rally to demonstrate the widespread backing for the resolution. Participation is key in showing Vermont’s legislators that citizens demand action on this critical issue.
