A common thread that exists throughout the volunteer network of Convention of States is the ability to recognize both the just and the unjust application of our system of government and a sense of urgency to put it back on course. As so many of us have experienced firsthand, a visit to the COS website for the first time reveals a formidable system of expertise, professionalism and clear purpose powered by a growing team of clear-sighted, well-purposed volunteers.
Meet one of our newer volunteers and wearer of many hats, Lady Ellen Lowe of Palm Beach. Lady Ellen, originally from Boston and a long-time resident of Florida, discovered the Convention of States page on Facebook and having found something of a kindred spirit in its purpose, she signed the petition and soon after received a friendly call from a Convention of States volunteer. Soon to follow was a Welcome Letter email and then another with the "next steps" one could take with Convention of States Action.
Whereas Lady Ellen had not considered herself to be a political person in the past and hadn't even heard of COS before December 2020, she did notice the core values matched her own and she could direct her energies towards her community as a productive way to vent the anger aroused by current government affairs to better enable the chance for a positive outcome. A bad economy brought her out of retirement and the compulsion to actually do something about the state of the Country is the driving force behind her. Now she looks to bring others along with her to learn more and do more.
A long-time professional presenter as well as a substitute teacher for Adult Bible Study, youth group volunteer and a Steven Minister through her church, she also runs her own business-accounting tax force and even once owned a retail store. A true enterpriser throughout her lifetime, she had developed her own companies by sensing and addressing the needs in her community and applied her own skills to meet them.
Lady Ellen noticed that in her district there wasn't a Regional Captain nor a District Captain nearby and knowing she already possessed the skills to be a good District Captain she began to use the COS website follow-up tool. Curiously she did bump into one COS volunteer who was with a watchdog group for a Palm Beach Republican committee. This particular volunteer asked her to do a presentation at the Republican Party Headquarters in Palm Beach and she accepted the challenge. With approximately 15 people in attendance, including two of her own friends who accompanied her, Lady Ellen was mentally "quick on her feet" as she recalled that she had 3 COS pocket constitutions, 3 COS pocket guides and 1 COS t-shirt in her possession. To make the presentation fun, she put together a small ticket raffle for the attendees and the response was very enthusiastic and the Q&A session that followed was equally successful.
Following this giveaway, there were 5 new COS signups and later that evening, a woman asked her to join the county Republican Executive Committee and to also give a presentation for 12 other committees in the area. Lady Ellen enjoyed giving the presentation and had also made note of other groups she can present to for instance, the Moose Lodge and the Kiwanis Club.
With so much inspiration flooding in, Lady Ellen had quite the laundry list of to-do's and she did! The COS University courses to be taken; check! Finding and completing the Biblical Citizenship course with the Patriot Academy; check! Meet with others from COS, like Jean Borden to learn FUT; check! Finding ways to be more effective with the voters in her district by informing Senators and Legislators about COS by sending COS notecards; in the works!
If there's a Bill about to be passed in the State, having our COS notecards mailed and land on a legislator's desk will make a huge difference... include a photo of the Volunteer Team seeking support; keep it brief; to the point; thankful and you have a means to a potentially successful end.
Since she is both District Captain (DC) 85 and DC 88 in Palm Beach Gardens she believes she will likely move on to an Regional Captain Role, especially once she has enough volunteers in her districts. In addition to bringing the adults up to speed, Lady Ellen wants to teach 8-12 year old children about the US Constitution and educate the people as much as possible about our system and current affairs.
In a nutshell, she sees herself as the "travelling presentation person" and along with her other goals is the task of learning Citizen Builder and mastering the tech classes for communications and media, where she jokes that the side effects from all this whirlwind instruction has included some dizziness and headaches!
