In this turmoil we deal with in U.S. society today, I’ve realized how much my Convention of States grassroots “family” lifts me up.
Why do we log in to Convention of States, pick up the cell phone to call others on our volunteer team, join Zoom calls at 9 p.m., comment and share COS posts on social media, attend district meetings, or jump into the myriad other COS activities we often do? Is it the joy of lifting up and being lifted up?
As for myself, manning the COS table at gun shows last year when I felt well enough between health issues gave me joy. Driving recently to a COS event in Laurelville, Ohio just when the wheat fields were as golden as I’ve ever seen them, gave me joy. Those kind COS souls who took the time to listen and lift me up despite my inner turmoil over my former church’s adoption of LGBTQ ideology that puts children at awful risk, gave me joy.
When we see the hopeful look on faces of people just hearing about COS for the first time, it brings joy. When we lift up a volunteer by recruiting him or her for something challenging, or by sharing that volunteer’s success story with state leaders, it brings joy. When a new volunteer wants to call and email every representative and senator in the state because they want to “do something to help,” it brings joy. When a legislator is willing to engage us with questions, support Article V, or to influence other legislators to support Convention of States, it brings joy.
Lest I be tricked by the rose-colored-glasses that I do actually wear for fun, the downs are certainly part of every day. But joy abounds! In these troubling times, I find delight in sharing the COS story with people hungry for solutions. Building relationships with each other and with our legislators brings those wonderful feelings – kind of like the way we feel after we’ve been to church! My sincerest gratitude to my Convention of States grassroots family for showing me the joy of lifting up and being lifted up.
