The Convention of States (COS) Michigan team is hosting a Town Hall event in Alpena, MI on Saturday, April 9, 2022, with Jim Carter, a retired Air Force veteran and District Captain ("DC") for HD #106, as the keynote speaker.
Jim has saved lives for years. First as a medic equipment technician in the U.S. Air Force (where he served for 22 years), as a Fire Department Volunteer in Central California, then as a volunteer with Search and Rescue in Southern Idaho and Washington State. Now, his community service extends to working to save our nation from becoming unrecognizable due to what he describes as “government overreach.”
He states, “Look at what’s happening today: as a nation, we aren’t quite at a socialist place, but we’re really close. People are seeing empty shelves in stores, high inflation, and things moving this way for some time.” He believes that COS offers a solution for helping to change the direction our country is going in.
Jim first heard about Convention of States (COS) in Washington State from a real estate agent. Later, when he moved back to his home state of Michigan, he started volunteering with COS where he learned more about the way things work in government, and about the constitution. He states, “What is really powerful about COS is that it is completely nonpartisan, and provides solutions that bridge political parties.”
A little over a year ago, he became a District Captain with COS. Jim states, “I was concerned about the direction our nation was going. I came to realize that the problem is really not just at the national level – it’s at the local level. People need to get involved at the local level to have their voice heard, and COS offers an opportunity to learn how.”
Jim’s 19 years in civil service gives him unique insight into problems with government “overreach.” He saw needless waste with many federal contracts and realized that the states could actually save money if there was less “big government” involvement.
Jim sees evidence of federal government overreach contributing to issues such as:
- A high rate of inflation: “This is actually a tax on everyone, everyone pays with inflation,” he says.
- A huge change in the military since he was on active duty: “It seems they are more concerned with teaching ‘equity’ than battlefield survival skills.”
- CRT being taught in grade school, instead of allowing states to determine the best curriculum for their area.
- Small businesses going under due to fines, noncompliance with mandates, and employees being paid more money to stay home than go to work.
- A border that appears wide open, in spite of pleas by border states that the situation is dealt with.
He believes the solution is to become educated in what can be done, and this town hall is one way.
