The Convention of States Project, a national effort to call a convention to propose amendments under Article V of the United States Constitution, announced the winners of its first awards program that recognized state legislators for their support of the COS resolution.
Six state legislators nationwide were awarded, including one honored from South Carolina.
Abraham Lincoln Award for Leadership Toward a More Perfect Union: Representative Bill Taylor, House District 86, Aiken, South Carolina.
Representative Taylor, who is the lead sponsor of the COS resolution in the South Carolina House, responded to the award by posting this:
“I'm honored! I believe the privilege of public service is its own reward. In politics I more often expect barbs and many challenges, and don't look for public accolades. So, imagine my surprise when I was called to the stage in a New Orleans legislative conference to be recognized for my efforts to put limits on the federal government by calling a convention of states to propose amendments under Article V of the United States Constitution.”
The Convention of States awards pay respect to distinct characteristics of America’s Founding Fathers. Nominees this year included 45 state legislators from 18 different states.
Mark Meckler, President of Citizens for Self-Governance and Convention of States, said, “Legislators like Rep. Taylor hold up the highest standard of statesmanship in our country.”
Winners were nominated by COS grassroots in their state and selected by a panel of judges which included former U.S. Senator Tom Coburn and Mark Meckler.
