John Quincy Adams Encapsulates Christmas

Published in Blog on December 25, 2023 by Kelly Oldford

We are in the midst of the Christmas season. And as we reflect and celebrate this Christmas season: the birth of Christ, our family and friends (those who have passed on, those who are still with us), and the traditions of the holiday - this is also a poignant time of year to reflect on the greatness of our country and the thankfulness of our founding.

This most basic truth cannot be lost in the fray and the madness of the holiday.

The origins of Christmas and the origins of the United States of America are inextricably linked, as two of the most impactful human events in the history of the world. I don’t say that lightly, but in objective truth.

John Quincy Adams, our 6th President and founding father, was once invited as the keynote speaker at a July 4th event in 1837, in Massachusetts. He summarized Christmas for us in a very special way:

“Is it not that in the chain of human events, the birthday of a nation is indissolubly linked with the birthday of the Savior? That it forms a leading event in the progress of the Gospel dispensation? Is it not that the Declaration of Independence first organized the social compact on the foundation of the Redeemer’s mission upon earth? That it laid the cornerstone of human government upon the first precepts of Christianity?”

Our founding fathers used the principles of love, compassion, liberty, equality, servitude and responsibility to birth a nation - the same principles that came into the world with the birth of Christ.

And that is why we celebrate Christmas. We celebrate God’s love for the world. We can also celebrate his blessing on the United States of America.

It is crucial to maintain Judeo-Christian principles in and around our civil government. And when our government and its officials begin to waiver, We the People have a civil responsibility to hold our government accountable.

Article V is the constitutional mechanism by which we legally, peacefully and fully hold our civilian government to account. Article V allows the states to come together for a convention of the states to propose amendments to the Constitution.

During this Christmas season, take the time to reflect on this great country. Be thankful for it and the freedoms we enjoy. Recognize the principles of life, liberty and personal property, and their foundational connection to the birth and life of Jesus Christ.
