Last week, even as the world plummeted into international chaos and conflict, world leaders met at the United Nations General Assembly in New York to wring their hands and lecture each other about opposing sets of values.
The bizarre juxtaposition of men who are responsible for so much death and suffering in the world preaching about “peace on earth” while any semblance of peace spiraled out of control was revealing; many began to question whether the U.N. had become “worthless,” an inept institution, potent in its rhetoric, but powerless to deliver. Should the United States continue to participate in an organization that refuses to confront the world’s most violent regimes and instead draws our nation into a dangerous system of globalism?
What do you think?
One such skeptic of the organization was Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who courageously called out the U.N. in his speech on Friday. Blasting the body as a “house of darkness” and “swamp of anti-Semitic bile,” Netanyahu pointed out that the U.N.’s lack of moral clarity “has made this once respectable institution contemptible in the eyes of decent people everywhere.”
“What hypocrisy, what a double standard, what a joke,” he mocked.
Rather than pretend, as so many others seem to presume, that the U.N. is somehow the savior of the world, the prime minister tore ruthlessly into and exposed the institution’s empty talk, posturing, and god complex. While promising to “promote prosperity while protecting the planet,” the United Nations has instead become an empty echo chamber where disingenuous men sing disingenuous choruses of “Kumbaya” while war unfolds around them.
What do you think? Should the United States leave the United Nations? Has the United Nations abandoned its purpose of preserving and fostering world peace?
