So, after having successfully gotten $80 billion in new funding for the IRS and authorization to hire an additional 82,000 gun-wielding agents, President Biden has nominated Daniel Werfel as the IRS commissioner.
If Daniel Werfel is approved by the Senate, which is expected, then Commissioner Werfel will be managing the new $80 billion in funding. The new funding was approved as part of the Democrats’ sweeping Inflation Reduction Act, which is actually not expected to have any real inflation-reducing impact.
During confirmation hearings, Mr. Werfel was questioned about how the additional $80 billion would be spent and whether it would result in higher audit rates for certain taxpayers.
Mr. Werfel assured the Committee that the funds would be used only to improve tax compliance and customer service in regard to tax issues.
He reassured lawmakers that the agency’s focus would be on ensuring that high earners complied with tax laws, and that audit and compliance priorities would center around enhancing IRS capabilities to achieve this goal.
Werfel also assured committee members that the new funding will not be used to raise audit rates for those earning less than $400,000 annually, asserting that this would damage public trust. Republican lawmakers have criticized the new funding and believe that it will lead to further audits of hard-working Americans.
Mr. Werfel previously worked at the IRS in 2013 as acting commissioner and was involved in a scandal in which conservative groups were scrutinized for having a tax-exempt status for themselves or their businesses.
So, now we are to believe that an individual who has already been involved in targeting conservative groups, nominated by a president whose previous nominees were installed as agency and department heads who consistently ignored the Constitution, is going to be the only federal agency head to actually keep his commitments. Right!
The only way to assure that department and agency heads stay within the bounds of the Constitution and are not provided funding to expand their agency or department, which then inappropriately targets constitutional conservatives, is through constitutional amendments which will restrict government spending and oppressive government overreach.
Every day our Constitutional Republic slips a little further down the socialist rabbit hole. Soon it will be too late. Every supporter of the Convention of States movement must step up their efforts to promote Convention of States, draw in more volunteers, and talk with their state congressional representatives to support the Resolution to convene a Convention of States.
