Iowa American Legion District Supports a Convention of States

Published in Blog on October 09, 2018 by Jeremy Kruid

The Convention of States Project is pleased to announce District 9 of the American Legion Department of Iowa has passed a resolution to support a Convention of States for the purpose of imposing term limits, fiscal restraints, and addressing federal overreach.

On Saturday September 22, 2018, the 9th District of the American Legion Department of Iowa discussed a resolution for the American Legion to support Convention of States Applications.

The resolution specifically supports applications that include term limits, fiscal restraints and addressing federal overreach.

During the discussion Jeremy Kruid, the Nation Veterans Coalition Director, informed the body of how the Supreme Court is allowing Congress and Presidents to violate the intent of the founders in the Constitution.

When the members were informed of the result of Wickard v. Filburn there were audible groans from the members. Wickard v. Filburn is the case where the Supreme Court decided, essentially, that if you grow your own wheat on your own farm for your own consumption you are effecting commerce by not engaging in commerce. The result allows Congress to regulate intrastate commerce.

One member voiced his concern that the American Legion should not take up this issue for fear of a reaction from Congress. Jeremy Kruid responded, "Fear of Congress is exactly the reason this needs to happen."

The final voice vote was unanimous in favor of the resolution. The resolution will now move to the Department of Iowa where it will be reviewed, discussed, and voted on during the mid-winter conference in January and Department Convention in July.
