Help Delegates Learn How a Convention Will Work

Published in Blog on July 17, 2024 by FL Communications Team

COS has sponsored two Article V Simulations that serve as dress rehearsals for legislators to learn how this process can successfully result in proposed amendments. COS leaders have to be prepared to help our legislators answer questions about how delegates are selected, what authority they have, what and how amendments will be proposed, debated, and voted on.

In this video Mark Meckler explains how he realized that grassroots volunteers, in addition to legislators, need their own experience with a practice convention. Along with Patriot Academy, COS Foundation is planning that opportunity for this year’s Constitution Week of September 17th.

Florida COS leaders are both excited and honored to have our volunteers, Troy Darling and Deb Gard, representing us during the September Grassroots Article V Convention Simulation!

As a COS volunteer Troy Darling worked tirelessly with the Legislative Liaison Team to create documents that will serve as a road map preparing Florida for the convention. First, they drafted a white paper explaining the need for a Florida working group to focus on the details. The group also drafted a resolution for a bill on how legislators would select delegates. More supporting information includes a sixteen-page sample plan that outlines possible amendments and their intended purpose.

A second volunteer to be nominated, seconded and quickly approved is Deb Gard, our state Grassroots Coordinator. There is not a state leader in our Florida organization, or even the national organization, that isn't familiar with Deb's work. With a history in Risk Management, Quality Management and Infection Prevention in the hospital setting, Deb's attention to detail and meticulous study of data has changed the very way we track our successes, not only in Florida, but across the nation.

As Mark says, this event will not be inexpensive. Registration alone is $1500 and attendees must also cover travel to Texas, lodging, and meals. We are asking for your help.

To support Troy and Deb as they represent our team and our state, we are committed to raising $3000 ($1500 for each commissioner) to assist with a portion of the expenses they accept as our delegates. If you and a generous group of our dedicated readers donated only $10, we would surpass our goal.
