Honoring Sammi Hammers’ iconic legacy with Convention of States

Published in Blog on May 02, 2023 by Brianna Kraemer

An icon, a hero, an activist.

Sammi Hammers is a woman of few words but a whole lot of faith, love, and humility.

In Mark Meckler’s own words, Sammi is “the most extraordinary activist in the history of Convention of States.”

Sammi has put everything she has into COS and has asked for nothing in return. Through her work in the COS database, recruiting, making phone calls, and attending events, she has earned over 720,000 activist points, the most ever accrued in COS history.

She also holds the highest number of follow-ups, completing over 107,000 personal contacts to new petition signers, of which 25,000 were personal phone calls.

“The federal government was getting on my nerves really bad,” Sammi laughed when describing how she first got involved with COS.

Those who have had the blessing of knowing Sammi describe her as spirited, down-to-earth, feisty, and a servant leader who walks a Christ-like life.

She’s a lady that sees the big picture and knows how to get things done, no matter the task at hand. She’s a mentor to many and offers golden words of advice. There is no amount of gratitude to truly honor Sammi; her service to the country through COS cannot be repaid.

Sammi is facing a significant trial right now. She was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor, but it’s important to know that Sammi relies on God no matter the fight. Even with such heartbreaking news, she persists with a smile on her face, hope in her heart, and peace of mind.

Members of the Texas state legislature signed a card praying for her and wishing her well. Texas Rep. Briscoe Cain said it was because of Sammi Hammers that he became a champion of COS. At the state surge event in March, he dedicated his speaking slot to talking about Sammi and asking everyone to pray for her.

On Sunday, the COS Texas team awarded Sammi with the first-ever Sammi Hammers Legacy Award, “The Sammi.” She demonstrates the faith, devotion, humility, service, and vision that will mark the future annual “Sammi Award” recipients. The Texas team presented Sammi with the number one inscribed challenge coin commissioned for this award recognition.

The colored portrait of Sammi, featured at the top, was created by Texas team member and artist Edna Krueger and was engraved onto the back of the coin.

“Sammi has been an iconic member of COS and the Texas team since the earliest days of COS. She was part of the group that got the resolution passed in Texas,” said COS Texas State Chaplain Darren York. “God allowed us enough time to present the number one coin to Sammi as the first recipient of the award.”

Sammi has touched so many lives, and the COS organization is forever grateful for her inspirational impact.

Continue to pray for Sammi and her family, as she is still in the fight despite her physical condition. In Sammi's own words, “God’s not finished with me yet!”
