July 4, 1776 is when the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence which declared their independence from Britain. It was mostly written by Thomas Jefferson. Perhaps his most famous quote was the following:
We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; that to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.
That profound statement speaks volumes. It sums up Jefferson’s wonderful vision for America. The final phrase states that government gets its power from the consent of the governed. But that’s not the case anymore. Big government holds all the power. Jefferson and our Founding Fathers intended otherwise. Let’s restore their intentions and return power to the people.
Article V of the Constitution (drafted 11 years later in 1787) is the answer. This very important Article gives every state the opportunity to attend a Convention that will propose amendments to the Constitution. These amendments would pertain to 3 general areas: limit federal government control, balance the federal budget, and term limits for some government positions (both elected officials and appointed bureaucrats). On a somber note, the Battle of Gettysburg took place from July 1-3, 1863. Fifty five thousand men died in 3 days of brutal fighting. 55,000 IN THREE DAYS! The Union claimed victory, but there were no real winners. The 4 years of Civil War deeply divided America (620,000 dead). A devastating war such as that would crumble most countries. But not us! We survived and emerged as a better nation. We still struggle with racial and socio-economic division in our country.
