GOP fragments following White House lunch

Published in Blog on December 05, 2017 by Convention of States Project

Republican unity is disintegrating.

Trump’s White House lunch -- which was supposed to be a pep talk on tax reform -- failed to bind the party together as Senators Jeff Flake and Bob Corker both took shots at the president before announcing their retirement.

Here's just a small sample of the media war between Corker and Trump that broke out just prior to the meeting:

Corker on "CBS This Morning": "It appears to be the governing model of this White House to purposefully divide."

Corker on CNN: "I don’t know why he lowers himself to such a low, low standard and is debasing our country."

Trump on Twitter: "Bob Corker, who helped President O give us the bad Iran Deal & couldn't get elected dog catcher in Tennessee, is now fighting Tax Cuts."

Corker on Twitter: "same untruths from an utterly untruthful president. #AlertTheDaycareStaff."

Trump on Twitter: "Sen. Corker is the incompetent head of the Foreign Relations Committee, & look how poorly the U.S. has done. He doesn't have a clue as ...the entire World WAS laughing and taking advantage of us. People like liddle' Bob Corker have set the U.S. way back."

While the pro-Trump contingent is celebrating the chance to replace Flake and Corker with more compliant candidates, the American people are worried. After the Obamacare repeal disaster, it wasn’t clear that Republicans could ever take advantage of their majorities in Congress. Now it looks like they never will.

Republicans used to unite around freedom and limited government. Now, they don’t unite around anything.

But the American people do. They’re united around an Article V Convention of States, the only constitutional remedy called and controlled by the people and the states. A Convention of States has the power to propose constitutional amendments that achieve the goals the GOP always claims to pursue: fiscal responsibility, accountability, and limited government.
