Election Debrief: COS volunteers elected into office across the nation

Published in Blog on November 16, 2022 by Brianna Kraemer

Convention of States activists prevailed in several state congressional races across America last week, helping pave the way to more successes in 2023.

Five COS volunteers across five different states won their election contests.

  • Evie Brennan, former District Captain for COS Wyoming, was elected to the Wyoming Senate.
  • Allen Chesser, former Legislative Liaison for COS North Carolina, won his bid to the North Carolina House of Representatives.
  • Jay Taylor, former Legislative Liaison for COS West Virginia, won his bid to the West Virginia Senate.
  • Adam Turk, once a District Captain for the COS Kansas team, won a seat in the Kansas House.
  • Bill Gustoff, former Iowa strategist, won his bid to the Iowa House of Representatives by unseating an opposed legislator.

Now over a week later, two additional COS-involved candidates remain in extremely tight races – just single-digit margins – too close to call.

With 99% of the vote in, former Iowa State Director Sarah Abdouch is trailing her Democratic opponent by a slim seven votes. Former Utah Regional Captain Quinn Cotter is leading his Democratic opponent by a slightly more comfortable margin – 138 votes.

These are existing victories and prove regular Americans serving in the grassroots have the ability to take action and bring about change.

You have a voice, too. It’s a matter of using it to make a difference.

COS is made up of millions of grassroots activists across the country that are provided with resources to impact their own communities.

With training and guidance from incredible support staff and other highly-skilled professionals contributing to the efforts of COS, there’s no stopping more and more grassroots activists from holding elected offices in the next round of elections.

You could be next.

So take a chance in whatever way you see fit. Maybe that’s taking the first step by signing the petition. Or maybe that’s finally filling out the volunteer form. The list goes on and on, from deciding to speak at the next school board meeting to running for any office.

Let’s all commit to making an impact.
