Rita Dunaway's new book, Restoring America's Soul, offers hope for frustrated Americans

Published in Blog on June 06, 2019 by Article V Patriot

Americans are frustrated. From the national debt to federal overreach to judicial fiat, the heavy hand of Washington, D.C., is only getting heavier.

Now liberty-loving citizens have a new concern: the rise of socialism. If the federal government is overbearing now, it'll only get worse as we move down the path to totalitarianism.

Rita Dunaway's new book, Restoring America’s Soul: Advancing Timeless Conservative Principles in a Wayward Culture, is the beacon of hope our country needs in these trying times. In clear and straightforward prose, Dunaway explains how an Article V Convention of States can limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government and stop socialism in its tracks.

“Article V of the Constitution contains a powerful way for the states to ‘check and balance’ the power of the federal government by proposing constitutional amendments,” says Dunaway. “But this process has never been used before. So it's really no wonder that the balance of power is so out of whack. We see the federal government, which is supposed to be a government of limited, specific, enumerated powers, regulating almost every area of our lives. And we know this is not how it was meant to be. The Article V convention for proposing amendments provides a positive, proactive, constitutional way for us to restore Washington D.C. to its proper, limited role in America.”

In a recent article published on The Stream, Dunaway explains how the Supreme Court has warped and twisted the Constitution's meaning to grant ever-expanding power to the federal government. But with a Convention of States, the people and the states can restore our founding document to its limited-government principles.

Having been unlocked, these powers can now be harnessed to achieve socialist goals. The only solution is to lock them back up, permanently. And the only way to do that is for the states to use their power to propose constitutional amendments that reinforce and clarify limits in specific, modern-day language.

The states can do this through the Constitution’s Article V. In fact, the effort is well underway with the Convention of States Project. It’s a nationwide, grassroots effort to convene the states to propose constitutional amendments that will limit the scope and power of Washington. (I serve as the project’s national legislative strategist.) It’s the only way to truly protect our great nation from those who don’t know better than to champion socialist policies.

To those who worry that a Convention of States could propose amendments contrary to freedom and self-governance, Dunaway points to history. The states have had many interstate conventions, none of which have "run away."

“People hear rumors of ‘runaway conventions’ and rogue delegates, and they go cower in fear. If they would just look at the actual history that is readily available, if they would just read the cases in which the Supreme Court has interpreted and applied aspects of Article V, they would see that there is nothing to be afraid of," Dunaway points out. "It's a meeting. A meeting where state delegations make proposals on a defined topic. Opponents to the Convention of States have absolutely nothing but rumor and unsupported allegations to offer. We need people to operate on the basis of facts, logic, and evidence.”

In Restoring America’s Soul, Dunaway says that placing value on the rule of law should not be a Republican or Democratic issue. It should be something all Americans embrace.

“America exists because our forefathers pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to secure for us the blessings of liberty and the right of self-governance. They left us Article V’s convention process to ensure that we would have a final defense against federal tyranny. If our generation is so frozen in fear that we lack the modicum of courage required to hold a meeting, then we are simply unworthy of our heritage. I am not ready to believe that.”
