“Dr. Tom’s Resolution” passed out of Oklahoma Senate Rules Committee

Oklahoma City – During the Oklahoma Senate’s First Session of the 58th Legislature, Senate Joint Resolution 23 (sponsored by Senator Standridge) passed out of the Rules Committee without amendment, discussion, or debate, on a 10-2 vote.

The resolution is appropriately named, “The United States Senator, Dr. Tom Coburn Resolution of 2021,” after our noble and faithful statesman who passed away in March 2020.

Dr. Tom’s resolution “constitutes a continuing application in accordance with Article V of the Constitution of the United States until the legislatures of at least two-thirds…of the several states [34] have made applications on the same subject…for the calling of a convention of the states limited to proposing amendments to the United States Constitution that impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government and limit the terms of office for its officials and for members of Congress.”

When contacted for his thoughts and future progress of the resolution,Convention of States Oklahoma State Director John Guinn offered, “Our Legislative Liaison Josh Brecheen said that the Senate floor vote should follow the strong endorsement from the Rules Committee. So, it should fly-through that vote and then proceed to the House Rules Committee. We will need another email and phone campaign and hopefully a few visits to the House Rules Committee members’ offices to push there.”

Undoubtedly, Dr. Tom is observing events and is probably very proud of this monumental achievement by the legislators and members of the Convention of States Oklahoma who made this day possible.
