More than 100 citizens gathered in Belle Fourche, South Dakota, to attend a Convention of States town hall meeting on Saturday, Jan. 23.
The third in a series of five events, the town hall united South Dakota patriots searching for a safe, positive solution to our runaway federal government.
"I have heard rumblings about a Convention of States for years," said Erika Carter, of Lead. "When I saw a passing comment on a Facebook group about the upcoming Belle Fourche town hall, I decided it was time to see what it was about and to bring my circle of friends and family who are equally concerned about the current state of our country and our government."
COS District Captain Harvey Fitzgerald reviewed details on the Article V convention process and gave people the opportunity to ask questions.
"The Convention of States town hall meetings provide an opportunity to re-learn what has always been ours, namely the Constitution and its provision for the people to rein in a runaway government," said Carter.
After the presentation, more than 60 attendees signed petitions to urge their elected state legislators to support the movement and encourage them to voice this support at the capitol. Many took petitions home with them to get their family and friends to sign also.
Several people made comments that they were surprised they had not heard about COS before this event. The more South Dakotans learn about the Convention of States Project, the more likely they are to be in favor of this grassroots movement.
"At best, it's been generally forgotten or ignored," added Carter. "At worst, it is suppressed and no longer taught in our schools. The uninformed and the uninvolved can be more easily controlled until it is too late and we realize we have lost all control."
There are two town hall meetings left in this series. One will be in Custer on Thursday, Jan. 28, at the Custer Library Annex at 6:00 p.m. The other is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 30, in Spearfish at the Great Plains Western Heritage Center at 1:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.
