County Fairs: where armies are found

Published in Blog on September 30, 2019 by Michael Jason Alexander

With the summer season winding down and triple-digit temperatures becoming little more than a sizzling memory, the Convention of States Arizona team hosted a "Grassroots Army Recruiting Booth" at the Santa Cruz County Fair in Sonoita, a predominantly agricultural community just 32 miles north of the border with Mexico.

The husband and wife team of Steven and Deborah McEwen Legislative Liaison and Grassroots Coordinator respectively) set up shop immediately adjacent to the Santa Cruz Republican Party’s Event Tent, gaining excellent exposure to crowds drawn by the district’s elected officials and those interested in hearing political candidates give their stump speeches as the state approaches the run-up to its next legislative session.

The first day was Children's Day, with about 1500 youngsters being bussed in from around the county. Deborah The Pledgehelped instill a bit of national pride in at least one group of these young Americans as she led them in a boisterous Pledge of Allegiance. Click photo to see video clip.

Along with the many visitors to the COS Arizona booth, a number of historic celebrities dropped by to commiserate and to congratulate the team for spreading the word. Among them were Lady Liberty and Betsy Ross, both contributing to the spirit of fun and patriotism that prevailed throughout the festivities.

All in all, 28 new signatures were garnered for the COS Project, one hailing from as far away as Washington State, ensuring that someone’s legislator in the great northwest will hear the voice of the people from the American southwest. The fight for liberty is a wonderful thing, and it’s contagious.

Heading into autumn, the Arizona team has three upcoming events.

SignaturesA display table has been secured inside the Arizona Citizens Defense League Annual Meeting, scheduled for October 12.

Even more recruiting will occur at a COS display booth at the Crossroads of the West Gun Show in Tucson on November 2-3 and at their follow-up event in Phoenix on December 6-8.

As a passed state Arizona may have said goodbye to the struggle for passage of the resolution, but we’ve said hello to the new-found objective of enlisting the largest grassroots army of informed and engaged citizens in the history of political activism.
