The following is a fantastic letter to the editor written by Convention of States supporter Mark Sellers.
As a citizen of Highland County, husband and father, I would like to bring attention to an obvious problem which is plaguing our community and suggest a less-known solution.
Washington D.C. is out of control. It will never stop abusing its power unless it is forced to from the outside.
Realizing the corrupt nature of mankind, our Founding Fathers knew this would happen some day, and in 1787, they unanimously voted in favor of Article V of the Constitution. This Article gives the States the power to rein in the federal government without depending on Congress to go against its own self-interests.
Ohio has passed a resolution calling for a convention to propose a balanced budget amendment. Those who support it are thinking in the right direction, but this plan has legal hurdles, and it is not enough.
We need to return to the original meaning of the Constitution. We need to take back from Congress the power that has been usurped by its spending our money on anything it wants. We need to take back from the President the power that he has stolen from our representatives in Congress to make the laws. We need to bring accountability to a Supreme Court which has repeatedly said that its only limitation is its own sense of self-restraint.
Sound impossible? It isn't! The Founding Fathers gave us a powerful tool, and God has blessed this project with leaders who have track records of incredible success. Most importantly, they are not just talking about it – they are doing something about it.
Three states – Georgia, Florida and Alaska – have already called for a convention to propose amendments to the Constitution. Resolutions are being introduced of dozens of other states this year with the goal of arriving at the 34 needed by the end of this year.
They have the organization. All they need is for "we the people" to support it.
The reality is that the country given to us by our Founding Fathers is dying before our very eyes, but it can survive! God has blessed us with an amazing opportunity to turn our country around. The question is, what is each of us going to do about it?
