COSHI's Act of Defiance in Paradise

Published in Blog on January 23, 2022 by Brett Kulbis

Last Wednesday (January 19) was opening day of the 31st Hawai'i State Legislature and for a third year in a row public access was not allowed in the state capitol building.

Not deterred, four members of the Hawaii COS Team (SD Mark White, GC Brett Kulbis, DC Paul Macri and DC Julie Yamato), met in the rotunda and by invitation from co-sponsor Representative Gene Ward, ventured in to the capitol building to distribute our latest COSHI Courier to legislators.

The team was mindful of the those with "Covid Anxiety Syndrome," wore their masks, and didn't enter any office that had the door closed. They put the courier either on the door handle or under the office doors of legislators. We were able to distribute the courier to about half of the 51 representatives.

Unfortunately, that upset someone and the Capitol Police and Sheriffs were called. We were escorted out of the building by seven, very courteous officers.

Even after being escorted out of the "People's" building, the team remained vigilant and was able to distribute additional COSHI Couriers as some legislators came out for photo ops and to speak to media.

The team is now wearing their act of defiance as a badge of honor!
