On August 6th members of Convention of States Action Maryland traveled to the huge Howard County Fair with livestock, horse shows, rides, and every food and beverage imaginable. The team set up a COS booth in the air-conditioned (thank goodness) Exhibit Hall near a riding bull and a wine garden.
It never ceases to amaze me how our volunteers step up and step out for Convention of States. As we work across the state in separate counties and see each other on zoom calls, there’s no substitute for that personal contact at an event. Listening to each other’s elevator speeches was educational and each volunteer was deeply inspired to act on behalf of Convention of States. We came together with the common bond of love of country.
We sharpened our petition gathering skills in a short time. We looked for anyone with a flag, in a uniform, or generally mature. Children loved to receive the COS sticker or button and then the parents came closer to learn more. Everyone reading our banners was greeted with a smile and encouraged into dialogue with “Have you heard about COS?” to snag their attention or “Are you concerned about the country?” Then, it was just a matter of using our intuitive skills on what to do next.
Using an iPad with the COS Progress Map showing the 19 states that have passed the resolution impressed people. For enthusiasts, we encouraged them to copy the QR code and forward it, not only to Marylanders but also to friends and family in the states that haven’t passed the resolution. Like a pebble dropped in water, the word will ripple out to so many more.
Schedules changed throughout the week, but our team of volunteers were flexible and covered for each other. I’m so proud of everyone who had the courage to represent COS and our grassroots movement.
We wrapped up our event on August 13 with 120 petition signers and felt our time was well spent passing out materials and giving others hope about a meaningful solution as big as the country’s problems.
Be sure to show up at an event near you!
