Convention of States New York rang in the month of October with a successful presence at the largest and longest running street fair in Brooklyn: Atlantic Antic. The event took place along Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, spanning the neighborhoods of Boerum Hill, Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, and Downtown Brooklyn. Some 500 vendors set up shop, and hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers and visitors traversed the busy streets from 12 to 6pm.

Nestled among the excitement was Convention of States New York, who had a tent and table run by grassroots activists. The event, accompanied by unseasonably nice weather, gave COS activists a chance to engage with the public, garner petition signatures, and spread the message about COS on a national and state wide level. Over 50 new signatures were collected during the day, and our activists were able to speak with people young and old, some who had heard of COS and others that were open to receiving the information for the first time.
In an age of ever increasing digitization of our lives and internet censorship, events like Atlantic Antic are vitally important, for they offer the opportunity to dialogue with people of all backgrounds, and hear new reasons why someone might support or not support the cause. Though not all interactions were favorable, the overall takeaway from the event is that there is interest from the public at large in New York in what COS is doing, they simply are not being made aware of it. Now in its 49th year, Atlantic Antic will continue to be an important event in NYC's second largest borough for spreading the COS message.
