Last Friday, the Convention of States Maryland team kicked off December with a special treat: an exclusive tour of the Maryland state capitol building, led by COS resolution lead sponsor Delegate Mark Fisher!
Walking in the footsteps of the Sons of Liberty, the attendees gathered at the
Liberty Tree outside Annapolis’ state house. From there, it was only a short walk to the House of Delegates building, where Delegate Fisher greeted a crowd of over two dozen patriots. In an excellent display of character, he held the door for us as we all trooped into the much-warmer office building.
Delegate Fisher then led the way to the chamber for the Economic Matters committee, on which he sits. He gave a straight-forward and sincere explanation of the political process, House procedure, and the finer points of serving in elected office. Afterward came a Q&A, and it was great to see a legislator interacting one-on-one with citizens, a sight that is all-too-rare in today’s political landscape.
After a very healthy dialogue, we retraced our steps to the State Capitol, and soon found ourselves standing in the main hallway, with the House chamber on one side and the Senate on the other. Because our tour guide was actually a member of the legislative body, we were allowed onto the floor of the House of Delegates.
After visiting the Senate Chamber, our tour concluded in the room where General George Washington resigned his commission from the Continental Army, a rare instance in history of a powerful man surrendering his power as our first First Lady, Martha, looks upon him.
Delegate Fisher received a well-deserved ovation from the crowd, who continued to explore the capitol a bit more before dispersing once more to the four corners of Maryland. It was an enjoyable experience for all, and we were grateful to State Director Maria Bedard for spearheading it.
“This tour exceeded my expectations and gave me the opportunity to see our old friend Del. Fisher and to meet new members of our team from across the state. My State Director hit the ball out of the park!” -Paul Macri, Maryland Grassroots Coordinator
Delegate Fisher and the 26 patriots who joined him, in willing to drive distances, brave the cold and the rain, and stand on their feet for hours, just to better understand the political process, exemplify the spirit that will save this nation; a spirit of fortitude and a willingness to engage in the political process, building relationships with legislators and making the presence of the People felt. Without even this basic engagement, liberty cannot survive.
The spirit of civil engagement and sacrifice is a standard that COS not only promotes amongst Americans, but holds to itself as well as we work to save our nation with Article V. As the Maryland legislative session is about to kick off, we encourage you to make your voice heard in support of the resolution, and help Maryland join the other 19 states calling for an Article V convention!
