Your Convention of States Maryland team hopes this message finds you healthy.
Now more than ever we need to stay in touch with our family, our friends, and our fellow Marylanders. What a crazy time we live in. We look to our government for news and hope, while at the same time understanding the huge amount of control that they are capable of wielding over our lives and wellbeing.
In many ways, in times like this, we need government to help guide us through financial and health emergencies, but we are never sure what the future burden of such assistance will become.
The COS Maryland team is thinking of our supporters and hoping that you are doing your best to cope, as we are. We want to make sure that you are kept aware of how very seriously our liberty and freedom are being affected by what is taking place at both the state and federal levels of government. Spending is skyrocketing, and liberties are being stolen.
As you now know, the 2020 Maryland General Assembly session was adjourned early due to COVID-19. The last few days of session saw the passing of legislation that will effect Marylanders for decades to come.
Items such as Netflix and other digital entertainment will be taxed in order to pay for huge spending related to the new Kirwan legislation and other last-minute bills that were passed without much input from the public.
Live feeds of floor discussions revealed that the last days of legislative work were carried out without public oversight or attendance. Now we have been given notice that the General Assembly is attempting to meet via virtual committee meetings, but we aren’t sure how or what the meetings will entail, and who will be invited to attend.
This is a concerning turn of events that raises the need for our Convention of States resolution to be passed here in Maryland. Our state is facing a fiscal and legislative process that may mimic that of our federal government. Overreach and debt will be unsustainable in our personal and professional lives.
There are many ways that you can stay informed about proposed, passed, and pending legislation. The Maryland General Assembly website is very informative. We encourage you to know who your state delegate(s) and senator are in your district and connect with them on their social media channels, add your email to their newsletters, attend any virtual meetings, and learn their positions on matters that affect you.
Most importantly, call, write and email your legislators often to make your voice heard. In particular, ensure your legislators know you support COS here in Maryland. We will not be able to affect change in our government without citizen intervention. t is simply not possible if you don’t get involved.
We ask that you follow us at our Facebook page and visit our COS Maryland website to learn about our work in Annapolis this year. Then please think of a way you might lend a hand to help our team grow and get our message out to more Marylanders. We must change the way business is done in our federal and state governments before it is too late.
Around the world people like us are trying to deal with the COVID-19 virus. Meanwhile, governments are spending like there is no tomorrow and taking the liberties, freedoms, and opinions of private citizens lightly.
We all need to do our part by being kind and helpful to our neighbors, acting responsibly, and doing our best to remain level-headed during this time.
On behalf of our team, we pray you remain safe, healthy, and encouraged in your communities during this difficult time.
