Colorado state Representative Paul Rosenthal of Denver (House District 9), a current opponent of the Convention of States resolution, has been busy this legislative session pushing for a new state tax on grocery bags.
The tax, under his sponsored HB18-1054, imposed for every shopping trip for which a shopper uses store-provided bags, offers yet another way the state seeks to legislate your behavior.
Meanwhile, Rep. Rosenthal has informed Convention of States Colorado volunteers that he opposes our Article V resolution to rein in an out of control federal government.
The Framers of our Constitution relied on the state legislatures to "jealously guard" the sovereignty they would retain under the Constitution, the principle function of which was to prevent the overgrowth of central-government power.
Excessive government growth, spending, borrowing, and regulating are all inevitable if the sovereign states aren't actively working to contain the federal government within its box of enumerated powers.
It seems that Rep. Rosenthal would prefer to meddle in your grocery habits than to take up the states' legislative role in containing Federal power.
Do you live in House District 9?
Let Rep. Rosenthal know how you feel about his priorities. Let him know you want to see an Article V Convention of States to help eliminate the national debt, not impose more financial burdens on Coloradoans.
