Cash-strapped IRS magically acquires funds to hire hundreds of new tax collectors

Published in Blog on July 17, 2017 by Convention Of States Project

Remember last year when the IRS failed to answer 90% of its customer service calls, and IRS Commissioner John Koskinen blamed budget cuts? Things have changed, apparently.

IRS officials recently announced their plans to hire between 600 and 700 new enforcement agents, despite not having been allocated any additional funding from Congress. When asked by the House Oversight Committee where it had acquired the additional resources, agency officials cited “high attrition rates” and “worker efficiency.” Lawmakers were skeptical.

“It was only weeks ago that they were saying they did not have the money [to hire more employees] and today they do have the money?” House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz said.

Any time a federal bureaucracy claims “efficiency” as a source of additional funding, they’re lying. The IRS no doubt had the money to improve its customer service, but they chose not to do so.

Now the American people know where their tax collectors’ priorities lie. The IRS can ruin a family’s financial future with one simple letter, yet they remain almost impossible to contact. They’re happy to take the hard-earned money of American citizens, but they stubbornly refuse to serve the people from whom their power derives.

Washington, D.C., needs a wake-up call, and an Article V Convention of States is the way to do it. A Convention of States can propose constitutional amendments that significantly limit the power and jurisdiction of federal agencies. It’s even within the Convention’s purview to propose the elimination of some agencies altogether.

We the People are tired of being intimidated, bullied, and lied to by our federal officials, and we’ve decided to reclaim our place as the source of our government’s power.
