Article V Convention of States: The Only Peaceful Means to Secure American Liberty

Published in Blog on November 17, 2021 by Robin "Buck" Torske

Our founders really were brilliant. First, they foretold a day like today, where the Federal government would overreach. Then, they gave us a way to stop it.

Article V of the U. S. Constitution prescribes a process by which "We the People" may alter the Constitution. Under Article V, changes are made by proposing amendments that are ratified by the states. Congress can do the same thing with a two-thirds vote in both the House of Representatives and the Senate or, and this is where "We the People" really get our say, by a Convention of States called by two-thirds of the state legislatures. In other words, you and me.

I think it's safe to say that Congress is unlikely to propose any amendments that bypass their self-proclaimed power. That means its up to us--the people and the states.

Mississippi already acted and supported this effort. We're in. In fact, there are currently fourteen other states alongside us: North Dakota, Utah, Arizona, Alaska, Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, and Indiana. Many other states are also in the midst of considering the Convention of States Resolution to call a convention to limit federal power and spending, and place term limits on federal officials.

We can help.

Acquiring enough states to ratify a resolution to convene an Article V Convention is an ongoing national movement. This movement aims to stop runaway spending and secure a balanced budget. In addition, we will end the dominance of "career politicians" and bureaucrats through term limits, restraining the federal government's power from encroaching on the constitutional authority of individual states.

The Convention of States Project took off in 2013 and now has over 5 million supporters. I'm one of them. I invite you to join me and notable patriots like Lt. Col. Allen West, Dr. Ben Carson, Representative Louie Gohmert, Senator Rand Paul, former Governor Mike Huckabee, and Constitutional scholars Mark Levin and David Horowitz in this movement to restore balance through alignment to the U.S. Constitution. In Mississippi, the Mississippi Center for Public Policy is behind this too.

Detractors use the twisted tale that a Convention of States means the entire Constitution is subject to being thrown out. That's a red herring. That can happen with a Constitutional Convention. However, we propose an Article V convention, limited to only the objectives identified in the application to vote on specific amendments.

Article V hasn't any power to remove an existing article. No Rights are under threat. The only danger is to the "D.C. swamp" and its failure to act in the best interests of our people, the people they were elected to represent.

Article V has firewalls to protect the Constitution and makes it so only strongly approved amendments are adopted. The best protection? Any amendment by an Article V Convention goes through the same ratification process as amendments proposed in Congress. It needs approval by 38 states. So, if as few as 13 states vote no, the answer is no. That's built-in safety.

In a Jones County-based organization, Free State Citizens Action Union, we share the aims of the Convention of States. Movements like this that align in our pursuit of an Article V Convention are allies. Through that alliance, we have a larger voice, so we have a real say in our government and wrest back control of our destiny. Working together, we can and will save our freedoms for our kids, grandkids, and their grandkids. I encourage everyone to be involved, somehow, someway. Look at the Convention of States or any other way you can be an activist for America.

Like I've written before, "the cavalry" isn't riding over the hill to save us. We are the cavalry.
