Are you better off?

Published in Blog on February 12, 2019 by Brett Sterley

President Ronald Reagan asked, “Are you better off now than, four years ago?"

I have thought about this question recently. It brings me back to the time I began volunteering for the Convention of States Project in the Spring of 2014.

I first learned about the state-led method of proposing constitutional amendments in the summer of 2013. Like you, I became frustrated with the political process. Being a bit of a policy wonk I considered myself informed and politically engaged.

I did my homework on the issues and candidates so I could make an informed decision come election time. No matter how diligent I had been my vote seemed to have little effect.

Government continued to grow. Individual liberty continued to decline. Our voices were largely unheard in D.C. It became apparent neither party represented the interests of a majority of the country. And the Constitution? That is an afterthought in D.C.

Enter Article V and the convention of states process. My first reaction was, “How can this be? I’ve read the Constitution, studied it, and I’ve never heard of this! Can this be real? Is this safe?”

Well, like you, I did look. It was and is real. Could this be the solution that has been hiding in plain sight for 230 years? The answer is, “Yes!” This is the Framers’ gift to us to restrain an out-of-control federal government.

Each day, we have more and more evidence that the federal government is unable and incapable of reforming itself. This is something the Framers knew would happen sooner or later. History has shown that every central government gradually accumulates more and more power and authority. The result is less and less freedom for their people.

Fortunately, we were provided with the ability for We the People, working through our state legislatures, to oversee the federal government. That tool is the convention of states process.

Go to our resources page to learn more or contact one of our leaders. If you agree that D.C. will never voluntarily return decision making to the states, volunteer and take an active role to save the Constitution.
