America’s Amazing History of Miracles: An Unusual Escape by Our Troops in 1776, Fourth in a Series

Published in Blog on February 27, 2024 by Myrl Nisely

The first major battle after America declared its independence was an intense battle at Brooklyn Heights, New York. American losses were estimated at 3,000 compared to 392 British casualties. The British had landed 32,000 troops from 400 ships in the bay and managed to surround the Continental Army.

General Washington’s only hope of escape was by crossing the East River without being seen. He had no choice but to ferry 19,000 troops, horses, and cannons to Manhattan Island in the dark.

Throughout the night oarsmen crossed back and forth across the river. About half of the troops had been evacuated by the time dawn was breaking. Imagine Washington’s dismay at the job remaining. Then, inexplicably as the sun came up, a fog arose over the river and the nearby British battlements. It hovered long enough to allow the remaining troops to escape (a very long time into the morning, we can assume). When the fog cleared, the British were astonished to find the enemy had completely disappeared.

This example shows how certainly Providence has an interest in the affairs of America. May it increase our confidence that God is watching and is involved with our nation today. Continue praying for His blessings on America and Convention of States. May He guide all who are involved.
