JAMES ASHLEY (Amendment XIII):
The 13th Amendment to the US Constitution was passed in 1865, and it effectively ended as well as banned slavery in the United States.
One of the leading politicians/activists who fought for this amendment was James Ashley. He was helping slaves escape bondage as early as 1839 when he was just 17 years old. He had to flee to northern Ohio with his wife in order to avoid persecution for abolitionist activities. He wrote a bill to abolish slavery in Washington DC in 1862, and he introduced a bill to end slavery in the United States via the 13th Amendment in 1863.
His position in Congress definitely worked in his favor and his years of writing anti-slavery legislation paid off. From his young years helping slaves escape to his older years as an abolitionist congressman, he spent a big part of his life fighting to end slavery in the United States. He is one of the main men to thank for its abolishment.
Convention of States is organizing a national effort to call for an Article V Convention to the United States Constitution in order to limit federal government overreach. COS aims to add term limits for federal officials and introduce fiscal restraints.
Let’s curb the national debt, together. You can be the next James Ashley, and fight for this country’s future. The United States can be an even better place with your help.
