Amendment Hero Series - Alice Paul

Published in Blog on May 03, 2023 by Emily Rosecrans

ALICE PAUL (Amendment XIV):

"I always feel the movement is a sort of mosaic. Each of us puts in one little stone, and then you get a great mosaic at the end." -- Alice Paul

The 19th Amendment to the US Constitution was passed in 1920, and it granted women the right to vote. One of the main figures who fought for this amendment was Alice Paul.

Alice Paul was a dedicated suffragist who took measures that were deemed extreme in the eyes of other suffragist groups. She organized women who stood outside of the White House holding signs supporting women’s suffrage for many days in a row in spite of rain, cold winds, or snow. The signs directly told President Wilson that he needs to allow women to vote if he truly supports democracy.

She was thrown in prison and assaulted by anti-suffragists, but that did not stop her. She starved herself in protest, and she organized marches. Once the 19th Amendment was passed, she still dedicated the rest of her life to efforts that helped achieve further political equality.

The movie Iron Jawed Angels shows her courage, and she is played by Hilary Swank.

Convention of States is organizing a national effort to call for an Article V Convention to the United States Constitution in order to limit federal government overreach. COS aims to add term limits for federal officials and introduce fiscal restraints. Let’s curb the national debt, together. You can be the next Alice Paul, and fight for this country’s future. The United States can be an even better place with your help.
