A message of hope from the COS South Carolina team

Published in Blog on January 13, 2021 by Pat Tondini

Many people are looking at this New Year as a fresh start. The Convention of States South Carolina team is encouraged by the progress made on gaining support for passing the COS resolution this past year.

We want to spread this message of hope to everyone in 2021. Many positive actions were accomplished in 2020, despite all the 2020 restrictions. We must keep pushing!

We have all seen the disruption of peace in our country. COS is a peaceful and legal solution. We take hope that the principles laid down in the Declaration of Independence and instituted into our Constitution will prevail. Placing our hope in these principles and the rule of law is our best hope for solving our biggest issues.

Article V of The Constitution gives the states power to propose amendments (just like Congress) that can be then sent out for ratification by the states. The only difference is that the states decide on the amendment language. Once 38 states ratify one of these proposed amendments it then becomes part of the U.S. Constitution.

Regardless of who is in control, does anyone really believe Washington, D.C., will solve its own problems? Neither did our Founding Fathers! They gave us a tool in Article V to stop federal overreach.

The COS South Carolina was closer than ever in 2020 in passing the Convention of States resolution in the South Carolina House of Representatives. It was only stopped by the COVID shutdown. We must keep pushing!

On Tuesday, January 12, 2021, the Convention of States South Carolina team proudly presented Representative Bill Taylor with our COS State Team of the Year Award. Our plaque is on display in his office.

Rep. Taylor has worked with COS since 2013 and has been instrumental in helping us achieve this award. Thank you and God bless you, Rep. Taylor!

So, what did we accomplish during the 123rd SC General Assembly session? We pushed very hard both in legislative and grassroots activities to accomplish the following:

  • Food drives completed under COS Serves
  • Formal endorsements of COS resolution by Republican and Libertarian Parties
  • Conducted neighborhood walks to support candidates supporting the COS resolution
  • Two more endorsements by U.S. Congressmen from South Carolina (Ralph Norman and William Timmons)
  • Hosted COS information meetings for new and previous petition signers
  • Considerable clout added to the COS resolution when Speaker of the SC House (Jay Lucas) became a co-sponsor
  • Hundreds of letters asking for support and thank you notes sent from grassroots citizen volunteers to our legislators
  • Extensive list of co-sponsors: 47 in the House and 20 in the Senate
  • Hundreds of emails sent to volunteers to gather support and stay informed on our cause
  • COS supporters packed House Committee Hearings and presented their concerns through public speeches
  • Passage in House Judiciary Committee
  • For the first time ever, the COS resolution was placed on the list for debate in the SC House floor. Unfortunately, COVID-19 shut down the legislative session.
  • Massive participation in 2020 GOP Nominating Conventions. Hundreds of volunteers worked to elect COS-supporting delegates for the National Republican Convention
  • Thousands of phone calls for eight candidates in primaries. All eight won.
  • COS South Carolina volunteers made over 11,000 phone calls to campaigns for pro-COS candidates in the general election. Sixteen of the 21 candidates won their elections

It was through this powerful dedication and support that we were able to achieve so much over the past two years. Over 30,000 fellow South Carolinians believe that the COS resolution (which calls for fiscal restraints on the federal government, term limits for members of Congress and federal officials, and limiting federal overreach) is the only way to restore true federalism to our great republic.

We need all those that are frustrated to come help us use Article V to legally and peacefully save the Constitution and our great republic. We need your energy, enthusiasm, and patriotism to save America!

Sign the petition and join us. We will continue to push legislators in this great state and all states across this Country to help us in this peaceful, constitutional provision to restore federalism and maintain a healthy balance between the states and the federal government.
