Marinus Willett was a patriot and New Yorker dedicated to the cause of liberty. By 1775, he was fully engaged in standing up against tyranny, both publicly and privately as a subversive member of the Sons of Liberty within New York.
Many New Yorkers may recognize the name because Marinus Willett served as mayor of New York City for one year in 1807, however, his contributions to freedom began much earlier than his short served engagement as mayor.
It was 1775 when he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel in George Washington’s Continental Army where he made a name for himself in early battles against the British and Indian allies in upstate New York. He was a key player in the conflicts at Fort Schuyler and Fort Stanwix where he eventually took command and responsibility for defense of the Mohawk Valley, using local militia members.
Prior to serving as mayor, he was appointed to numerous public service positions like sheriff and superintendent of construction, putting his love and service to the country on full display.
Freedom and tyranny do not go hand in hand and this is something Marinus Willett recognized as a young man. He dedicated his life to being part of the community and exemplified grassroots activism at its finest.
