50 Patriots Who Would Have Signed: Benjamin Franklin

Published in Blog on August 12, 2021 by Gayle McCowin

In an effort to enhance negotiations between the colonial governments of the thirteen colonies and the Indian nations, the British Government in London ordered the Albany Congress.

The Albany Congress met during the summer of 1754, and the Pennsylvania government appointed Benjamin Franklin as a commissioner to that Congress. Although a treaty with the Iroquois Confederation was the main goal, Benjamin Franklin had written to friends and published this original cartoon in his newspaper, the Pennsylvania Gazette.

The political cartoon symbolized the “Join or Die” union of the colonies; that to succeed in any negotiations and prevent the French and Indian War, the colonies would need to unify for protection and defense.

Benjamin Franklin was a major contributor to writing the Albany Plan of Union during the Albany Congress. However, though the plan was ultimately rejected, it eventually inspired the Articles of Confederation.

Benjamin Franklin was pivotal in the grassroots movement for uniting the thirteen colonies during this time period. His involvement spanned several decades and his accomplishments were significant as a member of the committee that authored the Declaration of Independence and negotiations during the Revolutionary War.

Benjamin Franklin dedicated his life service to freedom and liberty that American Citizens enjoy today. It doesn’t take a lifetime of service, nor does it mean you need to be a revolutionary leader to make a difference.

As many, including Benjamin Franklin, are rumored to have said, “War is when the government tells you who the bad guy is. Revolution is when you decide that for yourself.”
