34,000,000,000,000 reasons to call your State Senator, today!

Published in Volunteer Resources on July 15, 2024 by Peter Spung

A recent issue of Reason magazine arrived at my home in Raleigh, and it was stunning. The cover and lead article was a clarion call to action. The cover folded out to three pages in order to show the staggering US federal debt, and the flip side to four pages to show the exploding debt to GDP ratio. Hopefully the following images* will do justice to the staggering impact it had on me. And, motivate you to call your State Senator, today!

The COS Resolution in North Carolina, HJR 235, awaits approval in the State Senate, having already been approved in the House in 2023. When it is passed in both chambers of the legislature during the same legislative session, North Carolina will join 19 other states that have passed it (and well on the way to the 34 needed). If it's not passed this biennial session, which is in its last few months, the legislative slate will be wiped clean and the campaign for its passage will begin anew with the 2025-26 Session. For the future of our fellow citizens, we must not let that happen. The Senate must pass HJR 235 now to get on a path to fiscal responsibility in DC.

You may have 10 people in your immediate family, or 200 friends and family whom you hold close, or 1,000 friends on Facebook, or uneasiness about the 34,000,000,000,000 dollars in US federal debt (and growing rapidly at 1,000,000,000,000 about every 100 days) that we all share in. Each and every one of them should give you a reason to be concerned enough to call your State Senator, today. Please urge them to bring the COS Resolution out of the Rules Committee and up for a vote this Session. Fiscal responsibility is one of its three main tenets, and clearly lacking in DC as the exploding federal debt and uncharted territory of debt to GDP ratio illustrates. We the People through the States must insist on it, through an Article V Convention of States, if there's to be any financial resources or stability left in our country.

You can look up your Senator's phone number by your home address on this page (link). Urge them, positively and persuasively, to bring HJR 235 to a vote and pass it. Unsure what to say or how to say it? More info is here (link). Please do this today, and urge your friends and family too. The more they hear from the grassroots, their constituents, and citizens of North Carolina, the more they pay attention and choose to act. Thank you!
