Thoughts on the Article V Convention of States:
In a recent televised spectacle, we observed the unfolding drama of the first-ever vote of no confidence against the Speaker of the U.S. House, another demonstration of the inability of Congress or Washington, D.C., at large, to function properly. This incident is merely one more symptom of an overall problem happening in Washington. Fortunately, our Constitution has a way built into it to fight this issue.
The United States Constitution is a remarkable document. Article V of the Constitution provides two ways to amend the Constitution: through Congress or through a convention of states.
We believe that an Article V convention of states is the only way to stop the inability of Washington, D.C., to function, the encroachment of D.C. on our states, and the out-of-control budget. It is also the only way to bring balance back to our great country.
Washington, D.C., has become increasingly dysfunctional in recent years. They cannot even do basic tasks like passing a budget. This gridlock has led to several problems, including a rising national debt and failing infrastructure because of the funding of special interests.
The federal government has also been encroaching on the powers of the states. This is a dangerous trend, as it undermines the principle of federalism. The states should be free to experiment with different policies and find what works best for their citizens.
Finally, the federal budget is out of control. The government spends more money than it takes in, and the national debt is growing at an alarming rate. This is unsustainable, and it is leading to higher taxes and inflation.
An Article V convention of states is the only way to address these problems. A convention would allow the states to come together and propose amendments to the Constitution that would limit the power of the federal government, balance the budget, and restore the principle of federalism.
Of course, some say there are risks associated with an Article V convention. They say there is a possibility that the convention could propose amendments that would weaken the Constitution or harm our country. However, we believe that the risks, all of which will be mitigated through constitutional safeguards, are worth taking. The status quo is unacceptable, and we need to take action to fix our government. And there’s no better (or safer) way to do it than through using the Constitution.
