The swamp in D.C. is deeper and dirtier than anyone thought. It won't be drained with half-measures, and even though President Trump has done everything he can, his policies can simply be reversed by the next administration.
The first step to permanently draining the swamp? Cut off their flow of money. As White House budget chief Russ Vought told a crowed at the Conservative Political Action Conference, fiscal responsibility is key to weeding our corrupting and inefficiency.
“We cannot permanently drain the swamp if we don’t reduce spending in agencies that are regulating the American people, that are filling the offices across the country, the accounts, the number of employees in these agencies,” he said. “We connect draining the swamp to our efforts to reduce spending."
Vought is right. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a viable plan to force Congress and the federal bureaucracy to cut spending. The President can cut around the edges, but Congress will never give up its ability to buy votes with federal programs.
The only way to truly drain the swamp is via constitutional amendments proposed at a Convention of States. A Convention of States can propose a complete package of amendments that force Congress to balance the budget by cutting spending -- not raising taxes.
It can also propose amendments that drain the swamp in other ways. Career politicians make a living on the backs of the American people, but a Convention of States can propose an amendment limiting the terms of office for federal officials. This amendment can force our elected officials to focus on their constituents, not making money.
The American people deserve a government that truly serves them. Congress has enriched themselves and jeopardized our children's financial future. It's time to hold them to account, and we can do it with a Convention of States.
