"Trust, but verify," is for voting as well

Published in Blog on October 08, 2022 by Earl Hixson

Do your part to ensure accurate voter information

Now that you’ve used the voter registration information from our previous post to confirm your voter registration or to register to vote, you can use https://voteref.com/ to check your address for anyone registered who no longer lives there.

Search for your name

Use the above link and enter your name as it appears on your ballot. If you have a common name, you can filter by state, county, and party affiliation to find yourself. The website will display your registered address, registration status, and party affiliation. You can click on your name and it will display whether you voted or not in the last five elections and other information.

Check your address

Copy your address as it appears under the “Registered Address” column and then return to the voteref.com homepage. Switch to address, search by clicking the “Address” button, paste your address, and click “Search.” It will bring up all voters registered at your address. If you recently moved to your address, it’s possible that the previous occupant is still registered to vote at your address.

Request a correction

If someone who no longer lives at your address is still registered to vote there, contact your county elections office and notify them so that they can update their records. You may want to provide the evidence that you found on voteref.com. The county clerk determines whether or not the voter registration is valid. The county clerk can perform a records search and contact the voter using a Voter Confirmation Card, which can be forwarded through the mail.

Trust but verify

It may take the county clerk some time to fix the error, but periodically check your address on voteref.com to see that the error is corrected. Encourage your friends and neighbors to check their addresses so that our elections include only valid voter registrations.
