Brett's Blog Archive: Monday, April 25, 2022 - The Root of the Matter

Published in Blog on April 25, 2022 by Guest Contributor, J.R. Burdick

“They are in front of us, behind us, and we are flanked on both sides by an enemy that outnumbers us 29:1. They can’t get away from us now!” “Great! Now we can shoot at them from every direction.” - Lewis "Chesty" Puller

We often feel overwhelmed and in that state we flail with no real aim or intention, with just a zeal for the fight and an awareness of danger. Much like the Apostle Peter did in the garden as Jesus was being taken away, Peter attacked with great zeal but poor judgment and cut off the ear of the High Priest’s servant. These times when we are so surrounded require us to not flail at the disastrous vines which are choking out the tree of liberty but to focus our efforts on the root of the matter. We keep striking at symptoms and never the cancer. I would like to take a moment to bring our focus back to the root of the problem.

Our founders made the complex simple. They knew if the foundation was set properly, it would last even if the walls had been reduced to rubble. Another generation would be able to do the hard work of clearing the destruction and get back to the foundation. That is what we must do today. So, let’s not get distracted. We must remember these foundations.

  1. We the people are the sovereign in this nation. We were not formed by a particular clan who conquered lands and confiscated goods. We were not subjugated by a foreign power, nor sold to keep our security by other superpowers. We are a nation of political will. We the people will ourselves to be free. We the people will leaving something greater than material wealth to our posterity. Instead, we will them a glorious opportunity to better themselves. Unfortunately, we have forgotten this. This is the greatest part of the Convention of the States: its willingness to get back to grassroots involvement and its understanding of how to hash out ideas which will bring benefit to the common man and not to aristocracy. The power of the people works best in one-to-one communication and in small groups who interact at various kinds of public gatherings. Our greatest weapon is the continued gatherings of citizens to declare what we believe and encourage each other with common goals, and then to take this comradery to a public event to push for change - first at our local government and then up the chain.
  2. We must declare that no one is above the Law of Nature and nature’s God. The Magna Carta still stands as one of the most important documents of all human history. It clearly states that there is a transcendent law over all of mankind. This clear fact brings us to the root of the matter. We have allowed ourselves to be bribed by safety and leisure while looking the other way as others profit by breaking the law. We have ignored the disastrous policies of the enemies of our Constitution because we have been lulled to sleep in our luxury. We have given what was easiest, our money, instead of our time or our blood, to the cause of liberty. We have watched government grow and it has expanded such that it has cast off the binding of the Constitution and now it must not only be starved but the cancerous tumor must be physically removed to fit back into the Framers foundation. That takes hard work. That takes, first and foremost a realization that we are the problem. We sat back and allowed this. We were not overtaken - we capitulated!
  3. Earlier I mentioned how the framers made the complex simple. They boiled it down to a small phrase. “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” The order is important. It requires this order, and it must be retaken in this order. Life is the most precious gift we are given. At the time of conception, a baby has all the possibilities of becoming all God has intended for its life to be. At the time of birth, that baby could become better than the circumstances that they find themselves in. My great-grandfather, Clifford Burdick, was born to a single mom in 1899. He had nothing. His mother was ostracized by her community and looked down upon even though she had been taken advantage of by a wealthy landowner in their small town. In a desperate attempt to stay alive she married a black man in 1901. The stigmatism only grew. My great-grandfather worked from the time he was 10 years old to provide for his family. He had three half siblings from that marriage. He was destined for poverty with these difficult social circumstances and given little hope in that rural Michigan town. But he bettered himself and desired to farm so he worked and bought farms. At the time of his death in 1989 at 90 years of age, He owned 400 acres and had raised a family who became farmers, and businessman. He used his Life in a place of Liberty to Pursue happiness. We must agree to give each life the opportunity to use the liberty we still have to pursue happiness. The root of the thing is the first thing the founders listed - LIFE! If we are to save this republic we must not flail at the vines. As we attack this cancer, we must not treat the symptoms, we must attack the disease. Abortion has killed over 60 million of our fellow Americans. We must repent of this and stop this NOW! All other issues of bodily autonomy that we face start with acknowledging the fact that life is to be always defended at all costs and in all circumstances because we are the image bearers of God.

Let’s stay focused. Let us not flail at all the distractions but let’s get to the root of the matter!
