Did you know that the most powerful people in Washington aren't federal congressmen, senators, judges, or the president? They aren't lobbyists or bureaucrats or activists. In fact, they don't even live in D.C. at all.
As Convention of States Action President Mark Meckler explained to a Wisconsin legislative committee, the most powerful people in the federal government live and work in state legislatures across the country.
"When you were elected to the state legislature, you probably didn't think of yourselves as the most powerful people in the federal government. But the Founders did... because they were you," Mark said.
"They were people just like you. They were government close to the people. They didn't think you would be better people than those who went to our central government, but they knew that you would be closer to the people you represented."
We don't want to empower state and local governments because they always make good decisions. Sometimes, they pass bad laws and enact bad policies. But when they do, We the People have the ability to do something about it. When Washington passes a bad law, the people are powerless; when a state passes a bad law, the people rise up.
