Passing the Convention of States resolution in 2017 was quite an accomplishment. It’s easy to sit back and say, “Okay, we’re done!”
But passing the resolution is actually the end of the beginning, not the beginning of the end. The exciting work of self-governance is just beginning.
Missouri is at this critical stage. During the 2020 legislative session our goal is to pass the next step of the Convention of States process – the Commissioner Selection Resolution. Your help is critical to making this another legislative success. Are you game at becoming a minuteman or minutewoman?
The Commissioner Selection Resolution (CSR) establishes a method for a state to select its commissioners for the Article V convention. Commissioners are provided with commissions by their state legislature.
Commissions are instructions stating what the commissioner can and cannot discuss, and how he or she can and cannot act. Commissioners are legally bound to these instructions and can be recalled or disciplined if they violate the directives.
The next Missouri legislative session begins January 8. Moving Missouri’s CSR into legislation will involve House and Senate leadership, the full House and Senate, as well as the grassroots COS participation across the state. It’s important to establish this process now so that we’re prepared when the first of many Article V conventions of states are held.
Here’s where you come in. Grassroots involvement is critical to all parts of our movement. Having a working relationship with your senator and representatives is not only a requirement of self-governance, but also the only way our efforts will be successful.
Therefore, we’re currently building a Capitol Strike Force Team – a group of volunteers willing to travel to the state capitol on a regular basis to meet with legislators. These volunteers also will attend committee hearings, provide testimony, and be present for key votes.
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the legislative process and make a difference. Visiting the Capitol for the first time can be intimidating. That’s why other team members will be there to help you. I think you’ll quickly find the process addictive and look forward to each trip.
Below, you’ll find more information on how to get involved. Additionally, we need help contacting and recruiting members of the Strike Force Team. Your help with one, the other, or both will be greatly appreciated. Please join this critical effort.
See you at the capitol!
